Bloomaker, a Dutch horticulture company, first located in Augusta County in 2010. In response to market research which indicated that flower customers desire instant gratification, convenience, value, and lower prices, Bloomaker developed long lasting tulips and amaryllises sold to consumers with 7-11 bulbs intact on a pin tray. This technique results in beautiful flowers that bloom for 4-8 weeks. In June 2014, Bloomaker expanded its operations with a new greenhouse, and created 98 new jobs in the area. The company plans to grow its annual sales from $10 million to more than $25 million in the next five years.
Bloomaker partnered with the Commonwealth of Virginia and Augusta County through the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund (AFID) to extend a 1-mile gas line and make this project a reality. Bloomaker also received additional funding and training support from the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. “It is the marriage of Dutch entrepreneurship and the American drive and freedom that has created our success. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity that this great country has granted me,” said Joep Pasternostre, President of Bloomaker USA.
